Climate Warming and Species Extinction: The Road to Sustainable Development

Rising temperatures are altering ecosystems worldwide, causing habitat loss, species range shifts, and disruptions to food webs. Particularly vulnerable are amphibians, stenothermic species, and marine calcifiers affected by ocean acidification. The synergistic effects of climate warming combined with deforestation, pollution, urbanization, and invasive species, together accelerate biodiversity loss. The present climate trajectory is contributing to what scientists identify as the sixth mass extinction, with ecological consequences far beyond the adaptive capacity of many organisms.
